frames Between the
Neutral magazine is an annual publication devoted to all things Media, Film and Culture. Created at the heart of the Media and Film programmes, every year Neutral celebrates the work of our wonderfully talented scholars and aims to provide a platform for the gifted writers at York St John University.
Neutral is dedicated to always getting in-between the spaces of issues and debates allowing its readers to think, question and delve deeper. The name Neutral is inspired by Roland Barthes (1915-1980) as it aims to ‘outplay the paradigm’ — a phrase coined by his lecture course on ‘figures of the Neutral.’
Our magazine was created to allow students to voice their creative thoughts, insights and ideas, covering a multitude of topics and styles. It is founded upon six core categories which are Film Reviews, Media and Technology, Issues and Debates, Culture and Society, Arts and Fiction.
